Ganns Likes: Good Shepherd Alfajor

My friend and colleague Sarah returned from her family trip to Baguio with a bagful of goodies for the office.

Among them was this sinful jar of pastries known as alfajor.

What is alfajor?

Contrary to how its name sounds, it is not the main prostitute.

Alfajor is a popular South American pastry, consisting of two biscuits sandwiching jam or custard cream, then coated with chocolate. The Mountain Maid Training Center, who makes the Good Shepherd brand of pastries – their peanut brittle is killer! – makes its alfajor with custard cream and coats it with powdered sugar. They pop several pieces in a jar, which then retails for Php160.

Alfajor is best served cold – refrigerated for several hours but not frozen – and is delightful with hot chocolate, cocoa, or tea. My kids really enjoy the Good Shepherd alfajor; meanwhile, Caths and I also find ourselves struggling overtime not to consume more than two or three at a time, because once you pop, it’s really hard to stop!
