Contemporary Christian singer/songwriter Kari Jobe has released Steady My Heart as the follow-up to We Are, the carrier single of Where I Find You. Whereas We Are finished in the Top 10 – I predicted it correctly! – I don’t think Steady My Heart will perform as well, and I imagine a Top 20 finish for Steady My Heart will be more than generous. And here’s why:
Steady My Heart is the second single off Where I Find You. Typically, second singles don’t perform as well as first singles. While Building 429’s Where I Belong was not a carrier, but that’s more the exception than the rule.
Sparrow Records is now in the thick of promoting several of its other artists. I’m glad Sparrow Records threw a lot of marketing muscle behind We Are, but track records with its female artists, including Mandisa and Britt Nicole, show that the label often doesn’t support a follow-up single as much as it does the first. In the case of Mandisa, Waiting for Tomorrow was the second single after the number one hit, Stronger, and it peaked at number three. I’ll bet it could have gone to number one.
Finally, the song itself is beautiful, but it’s got a lot of competition right now. We’ve got comeback singles from Chris August, Matthew West, and a slew of other artists, and while there doesn’t appear to be a solid female single right now, looking at the current Top 10, there’s not a single female artist in the chart. My two cents, no offense meant, but we’ll see. I hope I’m proven wrong.
STEADY MY HEART Lyrics
Kari Jobe
Wish it could be easy
Why is life so messy
Why is pain a part of us
There are days I feel like
Nothing ever goes right
Sometimes it just hurts so much
But You’re here
You’re real
I know I can trust You
Even when it hurts
Even when it’s hard
Even when it all just falls apart
I will run to You
Cause I know that You are
Lover of my soul
Healer of my scars
You steady my heart
You steady my heart
I’m not gonna worry
I know that You got me
Right inside the palm of your hand
Each and every moment
What’s good and what gets broken
Happens just the way that You plan
And I will run to You
You’re my refuge in Your arms
And I will sing to You
Cause of everything You are
You steady my heart
You steady my heart
