Heather Williams has done it again! With her new single, You Are Loved, Williams proves that she is one of the finer solo female singer/songwriters on the Contemporary Christian scene today. To my recollection, the Contemporary Christian singer/songwriter has released two singles, Hallelujah b/w His Eye Is On The Sparrow and God Is Still God, both of which were really stellar singles, lyrics-wise and melody-wise.
You Are Loved is the second straight uptempo single from Williams. All her singles to date have been seriously encouraging, and speak life to the heart. My wife put it very well when I was talking to her about Heather; she called Williams a “wounded healer.” She knows what she sings about because she’s been through it. Every line, every word comes straight from the heart because she knows what it’s like to go through loss, she knows what it’s like to despair, she knows what it’s like to rejoice in the midst of the valley.
I think that’s one of the reasons why I feel I can really relate to Heather’s music. It doesn’t come across to me as empty platitudes blasted off by some woman who can carry a tune. Every note comes from a heart that’s experienced the gut-wrenching pain of losing a child, yet can sing praise because its joy comes from the Lord.
I remember something Heather said about His Eye Is On The Sparrow, the hidden track that came a few minutes after the end of Hallelujah. She said, “I wanted the listener to “get” that my story may have sad parts to it, but GOD has never left me nor forsaken me and the same goes for them. He cares for us.”
So when Heather sings, in You Are Loved, that we are loved more than the stars shine at night, more than the sun could shine light, more than words could ever say, more than the sky could display, we believe her. The conviction in her voice belies her strong conviction that there is truth to what she is singing; the fact that she is a powerful, amazing singer is second only to the fact that she has experienced God’s love, and the urgency in her delivery to convince us that what she is singing is true, is palpable.
While I still feel that Hallelujah is Williams’ finest single to date, both God Is Still God and You Are Loved offer such strong encouragement that it would be criminal for Christian AC radio programmers to ignore these singles. God Is Still God did pretty well – a few notches about Top 20, if I’m not mistaken – and You Are Loved should also receive similar airplay results. The message offered up by You Are Loved is one that many people should hear, and more Christian AC programmers should really be encouraged to playing the music of Heather Williams.
