After Show My Love‘s somewhat lukewarm chart performance – I guess I can’t predict a hit as well as I used to, or I’m just so biased for this Boston vocal group that it scares me – I wasn’t too confident about the chart chances of the new single, Your Masterpiece. That was until I decided to give the song another listen that I realized WOW, this song’s fantastic! While it may not have the easy pop recall of Song of Glory, or the powerful worship anointing of Praise His Name, Your Masterpiece has its own irresistible pull.
Ashmont Hill’s Your Masterpiece, written by Ashmont Hill’s primary songwriter Phil Thompson with Zenzo Matoga, had its humble beginnings as a song about the cross. According to Thompson, “we came up with this amazing melody, but the lyrics just weren’t flowing that day. Stepping out of the room for a moment, I suddenly had a vision of Christ on the cross as a painting, and the word ‘masterpiece’ came to me. It then occurred to me that the cross was the canvas with which God created his greatest masterpiece. Everything flowed and clicked from there.” And it really did. Ashmont Hill’s Your Masterpiece invokes a rich metaphor for the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, and as a result, the members of Ashmont Hill – Phil Thompson, his sisters April Joy Mtyora and Deborah Bullock, along with Deborah’s husband Wil Bullock – come up with a moving, worshipful ballad that can speak wonders to communion services across the world.
YOUR MASTERPIECE Lyrics
Ashmont Hill
King of all Kings
Born in a manger
The greatest story told
He walked on the earth
A carpenter came to fix my broken soul
Gentle King
You paid it all
Oh
On the cross with blood You painted
Your masterpiece
Selfless love hanging on a tree for me
Your outstretched arms a portrait for all to see
Selfless love hanging on a tree for me
Oh
Healer of nations
God of creation
Master of miracles
Broke every chain
Lamb that was slain
Came to fill my empty soul
Gentle King
You paid it all
Oh
On the cross with blood You painted
Your masterpiece
Selfless love hanging on a tree for me
Your outstretched arms a portrait for all to see
Selfless love hanging on a tree for me
You’re beautiful
My Savior
I’m captured by Your love
You’re beautiful (You are beautiful)
My Savior (My Savior)
I’m captured (I’m captured)
By Your love (By Your love)
You’re beautiful (Yeah yeah)
My Savior (You’re my Savior)
I’m captured (and I’m captured)
by Your love (By Your love)
You’re beautiful (You came to save me)
My Savior (with Your blood You washed me)
I’m captured (My God You rescued me)
by Your love (It’s your love)
You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful (So beautiful)
You’re beautiful (You’re beautiful to me)
You’re beautiful (Yes, You are)
You’re beautiful (It’s Your majesty)
You’re beautiful (and Your glory)
You’re beautiful (It’s so beautiful to me)
My Savior
On the cross with blood You painted
It’s Your masterpiece
Selfless love hanging on a tree for me
Your outstretched arms a portrait (Oh)
For all to see (It was Your selfless love)
Selfless love hanging on a tree for me
